On Tues., Apr. 9 from 7-9:30 p.m., PBS SoCal held the premiere screening for the new documentary CYBERWORK AND THE AMERICAN DREAM at the Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television in Playa Vista. Guests were welcomed with opening remarks from Associate Professor & Chair of Animation Tom Klein as well as President and CEO of Public Media Group of Southern California Andrew Russell. The event celebrated the launch of the new PBS SoCal documentary CYBERWORK AND THE AMERICAN DREAM which will premiere on April 11 at 8 p.m. PT with streaming on pbssocal.org/cyberwork and on the free PBS App.
CYBERWORK AND THE AMERICAN DREAM is a one-hour documentary designed to spark a conversation about the impending transformation of jobs by artificial intelligence (AI), with a balanced debate among experts on how both workers and employers can prepare for the impending disruption.
The documentary features a diverse cast of experts and notable voices including tech entrepreneur and businessman / NBA’s Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, co-director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy Andrew McAfee, chess champion Garry Kasparov, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, historian Niall Ferguson and more than a dozen scholars and innovators who add contrasting perspectives.
Over 100 guests attended the event that began with a reception catered by Fundamental in the very modern and tech savvy Playa del Rey facility. After the welcome from Klein and Russell, the film kicked off its premiere, the first of eight screenings across the country (full list below).
Guests included LMU students, the Silicon Beach community, PBS SoCal major donors and cast/crew from the film. Following the screening, PBS SoCal hosted a Facebook Live streaming of a panel discussion that was moderated by Marketplace Tech Host Molly Wood and featured special guests interviewed in the documentary as well as experts in the field including Chief Executive Officer of Skillful Beth Cobert, Director of Career Pathways at Microsoft Joshua Winter, PwC Partner Amy Peirce, Co-Producer/Narrator Elizabeth Cobbs and Director/Producer James Shelley. The evening ended with an audience Q&A.
