PASADENA, CA (The Hollywood Times) May 07, 2019Pasadena Master Chorale’s (PMC) Listening to the Future project was one rousing sensational event that premiered original music composed by high school students on May 4th at Neighborhood Unitarian Church in Pasadena. Excitement filled the air as the audience eagerly awaited what was to come and triumphantly each piece played. There were no disappointments here. To see the faces of these young musicians after their pieces were played – was exhilarating and touching.

Artist director, composer, Jeffrey Bernstein couldn’t have been prouder of the young composers who took part in PMC’s Listening to the Future evening. They are: Mia Patzakis, Grade 10 (Polytechnic School), Audrey Ouh, Grade 10 (Flintridge Preparatory School), Will Robles, Grade 11 (Polytechnic School) and Celia Deming-Bernstein, Grade 12 (Pasadena Waldorf High School). Each has worked with composer-mentor Nilo Alcala since last November to prepare one folk song arrangement and one original composition for the choir.

Bernstein was thrilled that PMC has the ability to give opportunities to young musicians with a passion for choral music – because they’re the voices of the future that mix with tradition.  Jeffrey says. “This is especially true for young composers who now have had the chance to hear their music sung. We’re thrilled with the work of our student composers and the overall success of Listening to the Future.” In a young person’s formative years what a gift PMC is to have access to.

With their recent fundraiser bringing in much needed funds for future projects, Bernstein is elated that the friends, community have stepped up and donated their support and that word is getting out about their programs and wishes. It costs a lot to run this chorale and the desire for an orchestra may seem huge for a smaller town but Jeffrey Bernstein seems to be a bit of the magic maker and inspires and empowers those around him to be their best. The wider the reach – the more dreams will be answered for this stunning, ongoing chorale with voices from the heavens so adeptly conducted by Bernstein.
