Los Angeles, California (The Hollywood Times) 12/08/2020 – Shouldn’t clothes be fun? Boho Kiddo’s stretchy tees and leggings are soft with lots of expressive prints. We talked to the CEO of Boho Kiddo, Erin Boghs.
What led you to launch Boho Kiddo Co?
I have three boys who are very close in age, twin 7-year-olds, and an 8-year-old. When they were toddlers, I was so bored with their clothing options! What drove me crazy was that the two choices seemed to be: stripes in primary colors or grey and baby blue. And then they get a little bit older and here comes Sponge Bob and Lego shirts… I thought, there’s gotta be a kids’ clothing line that celebrates artists at heart. And one that doesn’t have a boys & girls section. So I decided to design my own kids’ clothes to see if I could create what I was looking for. I researched what I should do to get started, and opened an Etsy shop in 2017. Then in March of this year, I quit my day job to focus on Boho Kiddo full-time. I’ve been waiting a long time to say that! Our website, Bohokiddo.com showcases what we’re all about. We’re here to support kids and families, especially this year, as we’re still in the midst of so much chaos. We also have a special offer to your readers!
Definition, Boho means to be socially unconventional in a way regarded as characteristic of creative artists. Tell us about Boho Kiddo Co.
It’s all about freedom. Freedom from stereotypes and boxes, freedom of expression, and creativity. It’s about looking at things from the outside in. Artists tend to see things from a unique perspective. We need to encourage that type of open-ended curiosity in kids. To make it easier for them to follow what they are naturally good at, or amazed by. Often, the passions that burst from inside of us when we are little, don’t live very long after they’re expressed. We end up silenced and shamed, and that part of us goes dormant for a very long time. There’s a Banksy quote that says, “A lot of parents will do anything for their kids, except let them be themselves. I want to shine a light on that. And we can begin to hold each other accountable for it.”
The designs are unisex. I noticed all the colorful designs including the feather tee, woodland leggings, and ridge tee. Is there a philosophy behind your designs?
I wanted to embrace the essence of nature, combined with bold, colorful, and geometric design. The Woodland Leggings you mentioned have flowing white lines that look like branches, but they also have a deep yellow background with large grey triangles throughout.
It’s brave to say no to gender expectations. It takes a lot of courage. So we’re trying to make it easier for kids to look at things from a different perspective. We want to help them understand those boxes are not real before they are taught otherwise.
Your business is purpose-driven. Tell us more.
Yes! This is the big reason I decided to risk quitting my job and get serious this year. I wanted to begin raising awareness of the global child exploitation and trafficking industry. Boho Kiddo donates a percentage of every sale to the End It Movement, which is a coalition of organizations, businesses, and individuals working to make sure that every single person on the planet knows about this crisis. I’ve been surprised to learn that the majority of people aren’t aware of what child exploitation and trafficking really is. So we provide a way for customers to help just by shopping with us. And by offering research-based information through our Blog, we’re hoping to make people feel empowered enough to lead discussions and raise awareness of the issue.
