Synopsis:
In SUPERMAN & LOIS, after years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, “Teen Wolf”) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Grimm”), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever – dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.
Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, “The Peanuts Movie”) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older.
Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, “Entourage”), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, “Graceland”).
The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, “Wander Darkly”). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, “Nip/Tuck”) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice.
Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when both a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, “All American”) and impassioned self-made mogul Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner, “Tyrant”) enter their lives. (#101). Story by Greg Berlanti & Todd Helbing, teleplay by Todd Helbing and directed by Lee Toland Krieger.
Review:
I loved this show’s premiere and as I watched it, I thought about me being a good father to my son and grandfather to my grandson. I’m right there although not a superhero fighting bad guys but being their hero and fighting off the badness of the stress of being stuck at home with COIVD.
As I watched this, I saw the struggles of two brothers, as my son and grandson are like two brothers. Both independent in their own ways, but both like brothers. I questioned myself, many times, like Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) did, “Lois, am I a good enough father?”
This is the big question all us father’s and grandfathers (as in my case) have every day of our lives. Our sons and grandsons look up to us and seek guidance from us and we need to show them that we’re there for them.
You see, I lost my hero, 33 years ago from lung cancer and I miss him terribly. But now, like Clark, in a renewed sense, I have an opportunity to guide both my boys and help them on their journey.
I cried, yes, at 60, I still cry, when I saw the tension that Greg Berlanti and Lee Toland put into the way Clark had to deal with his sons, one competing for the Clarks attention and the other finding out he’s the one with superpowers and not his high school athletic star brother.
Then how they deal with the fact their father is Superman is another turning point in the show which Greg and Lee have masterfully done here. This is when I cried, not like a balling baby, but tears running down my cheek as I remember my dad and his last days in December 1987 and the year before he died. I finally taught my old traditional Italian father how to say, I LOVE YOU SON! I learned to hug me too. That is what I miss the most.
In closing, fathers and grandfathers, this goes to you, STOP and take time to be with your children/grandchildren. Spend quality time and stop what you’re doing when they ask you something, want to play a computer game, need help with their math, or simply want to say, “Hey dad, I scared and need you to help me…” THAT is your chance to be “THEIR” Superhero Dad and step up.
You have one opportunity to help them grow and the only way you can do that is by being Superdad. Be their for them and always be there after they’ve left the house to be on their own. You need to be like Clark Kent is in this premiere and I commend Greg Berlanti and Lee Toland on how they worked this arc into the story of Superman and Lois. BRAVO ZULU!
