Downtown Los Angeles’ Corey Helford Gallery(CHG) is proud to announce their next major solo show from Japanese artist Miho Hirano, entitled Harmony With Material and Spirit, premiering April 2nd in Gallery 3.
Hirano is one of the most captivating Japanese artists in the contemporary art world. The artist explores the visual themes of sensuality and femininity by portraying beautiful women whose physical features blend with the nature surrounding them. Flowers, birds, fish, and water become organic accessories that adorn the protagonists, on par with precious jewels. The always fleeting glances of the protagonists symbolize the escape from reality, a theme thoroughly explored by the artist through an exceptional technique of oil on canvas that blends with the blooming flowers and immersions in clear waters, connecting us with the sacred relationship with nature.
“Dreaming” (oil on canvas, 12.5″ x 32.25″)
Regarding her new works, Hirano shares: “I am trying to capture one landscape by making people, nature, and objects sympathize on the screen. The theme of Harmony With Material and Spirit does not refer to a vast nature but rather to a narrow area around us. The feelings and moods I express are linked to and in harmony with the impressions and seasons of nature.” She adds, “I try to draw broad themes so that I don’t feel suffocated. For these new works, I drew pieces that express a mixture of small joys and sentimental feelings.”
“Inspire” (oil on canvas, 17.9″ x 25.6″)
In 2016, Hirano exhibited for the first time in the U.S. as part of a two-woman exhibition at CHG, followed by solos at the gallery including 2017’s The Beauties of Nature and 2019’s Recollection.
Harmony With Material and Spirit opens Saturday,April 2nd from 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm in Gallery 3, alongside CHG’s Sixth Sense exhibitionfeaturing six diverse artists from around the globe including Arinze Stanley, Chloe Early, Chen-Dao Lee, Jana Brike, RYOL, and Zoé Byland in the Main Gallery. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for entry into the gallery, plus guest temperatures will be checked and masks are required.
About Miho Hirano:
Based in Chiba, Japan, Japanese artist Miho Hirano first studied at the Musashino Art University and began painting professionally soon after graduating in 2008. Her dreamy oil paintings are inhabited by ephemeral spirits at one with their natural environment, whose hair flows into flowering tree branches or flowing strands of seaweed. She adorns their hair with accessories made of flora and fauna like swarming bees, hummingbirds, and goldfish, each carrying their own weight as elements of beauty and symbols of Hirano’s identity. In essence, each of her paintings represents a world where humans and nature can coexist.
