Puberty is starting younger and younger, especially estrogen-dominant puberty. We talk to three kids and one teen about extra early puberty and the funny, scary, embarrassing and joyful experiences that come with it.

Early Birds

Research shows that young people are entering puberty earlier than ever. But rarely do we hear from the young people experiencing these changes. Bodies talks with children and teens about their experiences navigating early puberty: how it feels to change before your peers, how to navigate a world that is suddenly sexualizing you, and how to find support from your friends and family. And how, maybe puberty isn’t quite marking the beginning of adulthood anymore, but rather a new phase of childhood.

Millennials Are Thriving Financially

The perception that millennials are broke and will be the first generation that won’t do better than their parents started during the Great Recession. But incomes have come back in a big way since then and in terms of wealth, millennials are on par with, or doing better than Baby Boomers and Gen X did at the same age. So why are they feeling more uniquely burdened today? Jean Twenge, San Diego State University Psychology Professor and author of the new book Generations, stops by Press Play to discuss the good and bad news about millennial gains. Listen to the discussion.

Loneliness

Illusion of Connection Makes Loneliness Worse

The U.S. surgeon general has declared a new epidemic in the United States: loneliness. It’s outlined in an 80-page report, which says loneliness increases the risk of premature death, comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. “The amount of time we spend during the day listening to other people — it has been cut in half in the past 100 years. And we used to make it a priority. You could work really hard during the day, but there was always that time where you sat down and you talked to people. … It’s this gradual eroding of our opportunities, our experiences with other people, that has led us to where we are right now,” says Turhan Canli, neuroscience professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
