This is the official GoFundMe site for Barbara Morrison, authorized by her, before her death, and supported by her family.  Its primary mission is to provide funds to pay for Barbara’s funeral and estate expenses, which we now estimate will be $30,000.  A team of Barbara’s friends and colleagues are managing the site.  Once this first financial goal is met, the team is committed to ensuring the financial support necessary to sustain the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center and the CA Jazz & Blues Museum.

The Morrison Family Statement “A treasure has been called home to rest peacefully and eternally.  Our Matriarch was loved and treasured by the city of LA, and across nations overseas. But mostly, she was treasured by her family. During this time, we ask for patience and prayers as we honor her life and come together to pay tribute to her. Thank you for the love, support, and tributes. We see you! God Bless You All”.

ABOUT: Barbara Morrison was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, she recorded her first radio appearance on the radio in Detroit at the age of 10.  In the 70s, Morrison moved to Los Angeles and became a ‘musical precious stone’ to Southern California residences.  In 2009, she founded the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles. Music fans could listen to live Jazz, Blues, and Soul music from musicians from around the world as they sipped on wine and ate snacks while tapping their feet to the beat of the music. Morrison was known to give children free music and voice lessons as well as an opportunity to perform on her stage.

In 2011, Morrison founded the California Jazz & Blues Museum, also in Leimert Park, which was filled with photos of the rich history of legendary Jazz and Blues musicians and vocalists. Morrison also serves as an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies in the Global/Ethnomusicology Department at UCLA in Westwood, CA.

As a vocalist, she was featured on two Grammy Award-nominated albums, and for a third Grammy Award-nominated album, Barbara Morrison’s Blue Lady Records served as producer. She performed in a wide array of genres from traditional Jazz and Blues to Gospel and Pop.  Her melodic voice, with a two-and-a-half octave range, is known worldwide, as are her rich, unique, soulful, and highly spirited interpretation of both familiar Jazz and Blues classics and original contemporary tunes. Equally, as striking is Morrison’s ability to belt out down-home, soul-stirring Blues.

Over the course of her 60-year career, she has performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the Jazz and the Blues worlds.  That list includes legends like: Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Moody, Ron Carter, Etta James, Esther Phillips, David T. Walker, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Otis, Dr. John, Kenny Burrell, Terence Blanchard, Joe Sample, Cedar Walton, Nancy Wilson, Mel Tormé, Joe Williams, Tony Bennett and Keb’ Mo.  Additionally, Morrison has guest-starred with the Count Basie Orchestra, The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, and Doc Severinsen’s Big Band.

Barbara also received the Living Legend Award from the Living Legend Foundation and The Jammin Foundation, LACMA/LA Jazz Society’s LA Treasures Award, and Motown’s Hal Award. For more information visit:
