Fair to Feature Special Exhibitions and Events Focused on Artists and the Desert, And on Fun and Games
A Variety of Themed Booths Center on Nature and Color, and on Women Artists
New York, NY, February 8, 2023—Intersect Palm Springs opens its second edition on Thursday, February 9, 2023, welcoming a dynamic mix of over 50 contemporary and modern art and design galleries, and a robust program of talks and on-site activations. The Fair will feature special exhibitions and events focused on the desert, with others emphasizing fun and games. A variety of themed booths will center on nature and color, and on women artists. Works from the Fair will be available online at Artsy.net from February 9 through February 28, 2023.

Adds Tim von Gal, CEO of Intersect Art and Design, “We are proud to present our second edition of Intersect Palm Springs. Returning exhibitors are coming with new presentations and fresh ideas, and we look forward to welcoming first-time exhibitors to the Fair. We will also have special exhibitions, panel discussions, performances, and other exciting programs—many of which respond directly to the Coachella Valley region.”
A series of exhibitions and events at the Fair will focus on artists and the desert, including Desert, Light, Art! a lecture with Palm Springs Life editor Steven Biller; and The Desert and the Human Spirit: Panel and Reception with speakers Lita Albuquerque, Diane Best, and Sharon Ellis, moderated by Scarlet Cheng. The exhibition Investigations: Zombie Forest is curated by artist, educator and activist Sant Khalsa, and Andi Campognone, Director of the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) and presents an introduction to the forthcoming exhibition at MOAH, focusing on the plight of the unique and iconic Joshua trees and the vital and sensitive Mojave Desert ecosystem that supports them. Additionally, foregrounded: Contemporary Abstraction in the Desert is an exhibition curated by Bernard Leibov (Founder and Director of BoxoPROJECTS).
Fun and games will be another popular theme at the Fair, with such playful activations as Hashtag Happenings: Poetry & Performance Series curated by art critic, curator, and author Shana Nys Dambrot. At Rusha & Co’s booth, Evan Pricco, the Editor-in-Chief of Juxtapoz Magazine, curates “Weekenders,” exploring what art shares with sports. Another exhibition, Art, But Make It Sports, curated by LJ Rader is the first IRL exhibition of pieces from the Instagram/Twitter account ArtButMakeItSports. Quality Coins and the High Desert Poker Club will host a no-limit Hold’em cash game at their booth. And, a DIY Card Art, But Make It Sports event invites visitors to cut up, paint, splice together art materials to make their own sports card art.
A number of exhibitors are putting a special emphasis on work by women artists including Artist Estate Studio (Brooklyn, New York, USA) which will feature work by Siri Berg, Mimi Chen Ting, Judith Dolnick, Hermine Ford, Joan Witek, and Ali Dell Bitta; as well as Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (New York and Bridgehampton, New York, USA) which will present work by abstract female artists including Maeve D’Arcy, Joanne Freeman, Conny Goelz Schmitt, Susan English, and Erin O’Brien; and Richard Levy Gallery (Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA), which will show art by two contemporary female artists working with concepts of space and time in the northern New Mexico region: Nikesha Breeze and Jennifer Lynch; as well as the Landing (Los Angeles, California, USA), presenting a booth of work by Anne Lindberg and Amanda Valdez which examines the painting tradition, which has historically been male-dominated, and the fiber art tradition, which has been primarily female.
Themes of nature are the focus of booths by Manneken Press (Bloomington, Illinois, USA), including Rupert Deese’s “Rivers & Mountains” series, Judy Ledgerwood’s “Field Of Flowers,” Anna Kunz’s “Echolocation,” and Claire Lieberman’s “Big Butterfly;” and Philip Martin Gallery (Los Angeles, California, USA), presenting, among others, new works by Aaron Morse who explores nature, ecology, and land use, and Daniel Dove who depicts single structures against banal landscapes and coolly decorated interiors.
A focus on color is another emerging theme at Intersect Palm Springs 2023 with Morgan Lehman Gallery (New York, New York, USA) showing artist Sara Genn’s current thematic, ongoing installation project, “Continuous Monument to Color;” and Nancy Hoffman Gallery (New York, New York, USA) presenting a celebration of color with artists Viola Frey, Timothy Cummings, and Jesse Small providing rhythmic and chromatic energy.
There will be a pop-up from LA-based Coloured Publishing—creator of artist books, zines, loose-leaf publications, prints, t-shirts, and buttons—the Fair’s official bookseller partner.
There will be an additional booth featuring a special design exhibition by Yvel (Palm Beach, Florida, USA and Jerusalem, ISRAEL), an international luxury jewelry brand. The booth is designed with a water wall that is a hallmark of all Yvel boutiques and symbolizes a connection to nature. The 2023 Art to Wear collection blends nature and design, crafted by a team of skilled artisans whose work will be showcased at Intersect Palm Springs.
The 2023 edition of Intersect Palm Springs begins with a VIP Opening Night Preview on Thursday, February 9, and will be open to the public from Friday, February 10 through Sunday, February 12. A VIP Closing Brunch takes place the morning of Sunday, February 12, and there will be a closing party the afternoon of Sunday, February to celebrate the Fair and the Big Game.

Intersect Fairs
Intersect Aspen is an art fair taking place each August in the heart of one of the nation’s most prestigious collector communities. Formerly known as Art Aspen, it has been running since 2010.
Intersect Palm Springs is an art and design fair taking place each February in the Coachella Valley. Formerly known as Art Palm Springs, it has been running since 2012.
SOFA Chicago focuses on three-dimensional artworks that cross the boundaries of fine art, decorative art, fiber arts, functional art, and design. It has been running since 1993.

Leadership
Intersect is a partnership of brothers Tim and Dirk von Gal, who are event industry veterans with more than 50 years of combined experience creating successful trade shows and conferences for business, consumer, and art industry sectors. The three fairs had been under the umbrella of Tim von Gal’s former company Urban Expositions (founded in 1995), which was acquired by Clarion in 2015. The von Gal brothers’ launch of Intersect in April 2020 brings the fairs back under their management once again. Intersect is part of vGMgt LLC, which is a team of dedicated professionals focused on customer service, integrity, and the experiential value of Intersect Art and Design.
Managing Director Becca Hoffman, who joined Intersect Art and Design in April 2020, was the Director of the Outsider Art Fair from 2013 – 2020, and was formerly the director of Peter Findlay Gallery, and Andrew Edlin Gallery. Hoffman received her B.A. in Fine Art Photography from Dartmouth where she helped start the first student art gallery and worked at the Hood Museum of Art. From there, Hoffman achieved her M.A. in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s in London.
